It's never a good idea to stalk what your exes are saying or what they're doing, especially soon after a breakup. But you can't help but take notice of the first impressions former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus is making with his new team.

Eberflus was hired a few weeks back as the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

It's a role that best suits Eberflus' traits and strengths as a coach and it was nice to see him land back on his feet after taking a bad fall in Chicago.

As a defensive-mind, Eberflus has always been really successful, even with the Bears. His defenses were always passionate and very attentive. And Eberflus always wanted to emphasize two key areas to his unit, take the football away and stop the run.

Low and behold, Eberflus stressed those two areas again when being asked about his defensive philosophy on Tuesday while speaking with reporters in Dallas, and fans are absolutely eating it up.

"It’s pretty simple, we take the ball away," Eberflus told reporters via The Athletic's Jon Machota. "That’s what we do. We stop the run. We want to make exciting plays for our football team. That’s really what we do.”

Now, there's definitely some truth to his words. In Chicago, Eberflus' unit always swarmed to the football and capitalized on opportunities to steal the ball away from the offense. In 2023, the Bears were tied for first in the NFL with 22 interceptions and in 2024 Eberflus stressed the importance of create forced fumbles as well.

Against the run, the Bears ranked first in rushing yards allowed in 2023 but struggled heavily in that department in 2024. Needless to say, what Eberflus is preaching is valid when looking at the play of his previous defenses.

His ultimate downfall in Chicago came from how he managed the locker room and the accountability aspect that comes with being a head coach. However, it seems like he's taken the time to learn from his mistakes and is willing to help prevent another first-time head coach in Schottenheimer, that no one seems to be a fan of, from making the same mistakes.

“I’m here for you," Eberflus said when asked about helping Schottenheimer. "Utilize me because I do have the experience of being a head coach.”

That he certainly does. And saying something like that is only going to get the Cowboys' fans fired up even more after hearing him speak.
