Despite finally finding the right head coach in Ben Johnson, this has still been quite the newsworthy coaching cycle for the Chicago Bears.

The news that directly impacts the Bears is the loss of offensive coordinator Declan Doyle and running backs coach Eric Bieniemy with Doyle taking the offensive coordinator position with the Baltimore Ravens and Bieniemy re-joining the Kansas City Chiefs as the team’s offensive coordinator.

It’s also been a rollercoaster of a cycle for the Bears two former head coaches with Matt Eberflus getting fired by the Dallas Cowboys from his defensive coordinator position and now with Matt Nagy finally landing a new gig for the 2026 season.

Matt Nagy hired as the New York Giants offensive coordinator under John Harbaugh

The PR push for Nagy was strong going into this year’s coaching cycle and it seemed like the former AP Coach of the Year would be back in the big chair three years after being fired by the Bears.

Nagy was interviewed by four different teams for their head coach openings during the month of January and was one of the finalists for the Tennessee Titans job, a position that ultimately went to Robert Saleh. In the meantime, the Chiefs quickly filled Nagy’s position after his contract expired with Bieniemy, giving Nagy little security to turn back to.

Last week, the 10th and final head coach opening was filled and Nagy was still left without a job, forcing him to return back to an offensive coordinator role after being hired by the New York Giants to work under John Harbaugh, a close friend of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

All in all, it’s not a bad gig for Nagy being able to call the offense with the Giants that features a young core of offensive players in a big market. For someone wanting to rebuild his image and one day land another head coaching gig, there’s worst situations to be in. Landing in New York also gets Nagy out of Reid’s shadow.

It’s a big opportunity for Nagy and if it turns into a successful season for the Giants offense, he can position himself into more head coaching interviews in the 2027 cycle.
