Chicago Bears new stadium plan Arlington Heights Soldier Field Keyshawn Johnson ESPN analyst home field advantage record stats capacity

Typically the national media opts to let ignorant takes fly early in the offseason to create online engagement in a dry period for football content.

However, ESPN’s Keyshawn Johnson proved on Wednesday that he takes no days off from outlandish and uninformed opinions.

Johnson saw an opportunity to take a shot at the Chicago Bears and the team’s future plans for a new stadium and did so without hesitation.

“Why would you put a dome in Chicago and take away your home-field advantage that you have? That’s really the only thing that you have right now is your home-field advantage. Your team is not good,” Johnson declared on ESPN.

This home-field advantage that Johnson speaks of hasn’t been much of a factor over the last 10 seasons. In fact, the Bears sit eight games below .500 (36-44) in games played at Soldier Field since 2012.

Furthermore, Soldier Field has the smallest stadium capacity in the NFL at 61,500.

Though the team can’t exit its lease until 2026, the Bears have revealed plans for an enclosed stadium in Arlington Heights.

The stadium will serve multiple purposes for Chicago as the city will be more likely to land events such as a Super Bowl and Final Four.

"Bear weather" doesn’t cater to Chicago like it did in decades past, especially since the NFL has moved toward a more pass-friendly offensive approach.

Plus, I would expect the new stadium to top Soldier Field’s current capacity and shouldn’t have any trouble filling it up when the weather gets cold and blistery late in the season.

For someone as accomplished as Johnson to miss so badly on such an easy topic is not a good look for the worldwide leader in sports.
