The Chicago Bears are in a strange place as a franchise right now.

New general manager Ryan Poles has been tasked with rebuilding the roster, while also attempting to stay competitive in 2022.

That's not an easy mission.

Chicago has been shedding salary this offseason while attempting to make frugal additions to the roster. The Bears are essentially looking for "hidden gems" as they create future financial flexibility and add draft capital.

One potential "hidden gem" for the Bears could be New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney.

Toney was the Giants' first-round selection (No. 20 overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft.

New York is open to trading Toney this offseason according to a recent report from ESPN.

The former Florida standout had a problematic rookie season, appearing in just 10 games after several positive COVID-19 tests and various injuries.

Toney has also had some other issues, such as wearing the wrong-sized cleats during mini-camps last year or choosing to skip the Giants' voluntary workouts this offseason (which is fine, but it's also a bad look for a second-year player).

Despite those issues, Toney is still a talented player with a lot of upside. He caught 39 passes for 420 yards in 10 games as a rookie last year. Over a 17-game season, that would extrapolate to 66 receptions for 714 yards. That would be a solid rookie season — especially on a team that had the No. 31 scoring offense in the NFL last year.

The Bears could make a low-ball offer for Toney and see if the Giants bite. If Chicago could get Toney for a mid-round selection (which seems unlikely, but it's worth a shot), they could end up with a cheap No. 2 wide receiver that would complement Darnell Mooney.

Toney has sub 4.40 speed and he's tremendous after the catch. He could essentially play a Randall Cobb-like role for the Bears in Luke Getsy's offense (Getsy was previously the Green Bay Packers' quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator).

These are the types of low-cost moves Poles has been making this offseason. The Bears need to add another wide receiver before the start of the 2022 season (especially since Byron Pringle was arrested over the weekend, which could result in league discipline).

Toney is worth the gamble as long as the price isn't too high.
