Everybody has an opinion on how Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles performed at the NFL’s trade deadline. However, one report indicated that Poles managed to dunk all over the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday.
Chicago traded a second-round draft pick in 2023 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for wide receiver Chase Claypool.
There is no doubt that Claypool is a tremendous upgrade out wide for QB Justin Fields. What makes this deal even sweeter for Chicago is that they plucked Claypool from Pittsburgh before Green Bay could get their hands on the 24-year-old.
CBS Sports’ NFL Insider Josina Anderson reports that the Packers were in on Claypool on Tuesday morning. She goes on to say that she was told that it appeared as if the Packers had presented the best package for Claypool’s services.
Obviously Poles swooped in and got the deal done, but it might help explain why Chicago had to give up a second rounder.
Claypool’s catch radius at six-foot-four is something the Bears were missing in the wide receiver room. Playing in his third season in the NFL, Claypool has 153 catches for 2,044 yards and 12 touchdowns in his career.
There is no question that the Bears’ roster improved on Tuesday. Finding adequate help for Fields remains paramount as the team continues to monitor his development.
Poles can’t fix every problem he inherited when he was hired this offseason, but this trade is a small step forward for the franchise. Beating the Packers to a receiver with a high ceiling only adds to the excitement.
