The Chicago Bears selection of Michigan tight end Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft stunned the entire league and shook up the entire first-round, but in a good way.
The Bears have clearly been high on this guy, his character, and his athletic potential for a while now. General manager Ryan Poles even went as far to say that he's been watching Loveland's game since looking into Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy prior to the 2024 NFL Draft.
Turn on the tape and it's easy to see why Poles, Ben Johnson, and the rest of the Bears organization felt this way, and they weren't the only ones.
Other teams had Loveland graded out as the highest-ranked tight end over Penn State Tyler Warren, who's still a really good player himself. The reason why is because there's more potential with how you can use Loveland in the passing game, which was enticing to pair with quarterback like Caleb Williams.
In the thick of the draft, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport was mentioning multiple teams were looking to move up early in the draft. After the Bears selected Loveland, those talks started to quiet down and no deals were made. The reason why? The Bears stole everyone's guy with the 10th overall pick.
"Every year, there is a player who gets really hot really late, one that teams are scrambling to trade up for," Rapoport said via X. "Last night, that player was Michigan TE Colston Loveland. When the Bears picked him at No. 10, the calls in the early teens quieted. There wasn't a trade until 25."
This proves that Ryan Poles and Ben Johnson made the right decision going with Loveland with the 10th overall pick. His energy is off the chart as is the athleticism and every team wanted the opportunity to have a guy like that.
What he can do for a passing game is unbelievable and there's still so much untapped potential in his game. He's a true vertical threat at the position similar in style to Sam LaPorta or even going back to Greg Olsen.
It certainly seems like the Bears took the right guy in the first-round and the team is fired up to add him to the offense alongside Cole Kmet at the position. He's the perfect fit for what Ben Johnson is looking to do on that side of the ball.
