The Chicago Bears made a massive announcement on Saturday after agreeing to terms on a new contract extension with newly acquired pass rusher Montez Sweat.

However, more importantly, the Bears came to an agreement with the new defensive star before making a decision on the current disgruntled cornerback the team already had on the roster.

Now, that decision has come to the forefront for the Bears. Cornerback Jaylon Johnson remained on the team following Tuesday's NFL trade deadline and his future with the team still remains uncertain.

Johnson spoke with the media on Wednesday and explained that he was shocked he wasn't moved at the deadline but still believes he wants to remain in Chicago long-term.

"At the end of the day, I can only weigh my options but there's only so much I can control," Johnson explained when asked about his future in Chicago.

Unfortunately, that's the honest reality for Johnson. Given the situation with extending the Bears new pass rusher, Sweat had all of the leverage to work out a deal that benefitted him the most. Johnson doesn't have that kind of luxury.

There is a clear disconnect between what Johnson feels he deserves on a long-term deal and the price general manager Ryan Poles is willing to spend. If Johnson keeps refusing to back down off his price, the Bears would have no choice but to move him at the end of the season.

Poles has all of the leverage in negotiations for this contract extension. He has no reason to back off the price he feels his team should spend on Johnson's new deal and seemingly would have no problem moving Johnson if it comes down to it.

The Bears reportedly had multiple interested candidates for Johnson and talks will heat back up even more so during the offseason. Since the Bears locked up Sweat on a long-term deal already, the franchise tag is now open to freely be used on Johnson. The pending free agent wouldn't be able to even sniff free agency and the Bears will still be able to trade him for top compensation in return.

This on-going battle between Johnson and the front office will only continue throughout the rest of the season and Johnson only has one true option he's in control of, and that's dropping his price.

However, there is another option that Johnson does have control over. During the final few weeks of the season, Johnson can also show the Bears front office that he truly is deserving of the price tag he wants by proving it on the field.

"At the end of the day, my level of expectations of play and making plays hasn't changed just because of the situation," Johnson said. "I'm still going to continue to play the game at a high level, continue to reach to get interceptions and turn the ball over, and I only know that's going to make the value go up."

Johnson's play has put him among some of the league's best at the position through the first nine weeks of the season. If his game can evolve even more now that the unit has Sweat rushing the passer, maybe Johnson will have a chance to strong arm the Bears into getting what he wants as well.

Bears sign Montez Sweat to massive extension

Well, that didn't take long. The Chicago Bears traded for Montez Sweat at the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday and now they've locked him up for the long term.  The Bears have signed Sweat to a four-year, $98 million deal that is worth up to $105 million. That contract jumps Maxx Crosby and makes Sweat […]
