It is inevitable it seems that the Chicago Bears will soon move off of Justin Fields and ship him to another team.
Destinations have been floated and one that has been talked about more and more recently is the Cleveland Browns.
Yes, the team that gave up a boatload of draft capital and a fully guaranteed contract to Deshaun Watson just a couple of years ago. The same gram that has not got a return worth the move they made for Watson to this point.
Today, The Athletic was the latest to predict Fields landing with the Browns. It makes sense on some fronts. The Browns clearly want to operate with a mobile quarterback. Watson was joined by a quarterback room of Dorian Thompson-Robinson and P.J. Walker initially last season. DTR was drafted to be the long-term backup and like Watson, he can take off.
Jeff Driskel and Jacoby Brissett can move in their own right and the only quarterback in Cleveland that isn’t a mover over the last couple of seasons was Joe Flacco.
At just 25 years old, Fields deserves a chance to start in this league or at least battle for the job. He’s not going to get that in Cleveland at least initially and it probably wouldn’t happen in his first year there barring an injury or something catastrophic. If Watson’s play is bad, there will certainly be noise that the Browns need to make the switch to Fields, but the organization wouldn’t really be in a spot to do that yet.
Sure, Cleveland can opt to sit Watson if it comes to that but that is not going to go over well with ownership that gave $230 million guaranteed to Watson. Watson is not a free agent until 2027 and is making $46 million a year on average. That is an expensive body sitting on the bench if it comes to it.
Bears have said they want to do right by Fields and sending him to Cleveland may not be the most ideal spot. There are teams out there that he would elevate their quarterback room and be given a chance to get the job. Cleveland will not be offering him either of those in the 2024 season.
Chicago Bears could add the missing piece to Matt Eberflus’ defensive line in free agency
Will the Bears make a splash and bring him in?
