Former Bears offensive lineman is ready to go scorched earth on Caleb Williams haters following his impressive game in Week 3
He’s not going to hold back.
I’ve never understood the hate and discourse for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams. Has he struggled to consistently produce at a high level? Sure. Did he also have to find his way through a rookie season without much support or guidance? Sure did. Yet, he still put together one of the best seasons by any Bears quarterback, ever.
Now, three games into his second season with a new head coach in Ben Johnson, people are starting to see the pieces come together for this young quarterback. And some people aren’t going to forget what some of the haters have said about Williams the last 12 months.
“We’ve reached the point of Caleb Williams career where I’m going back to some of my bookmarks of tweets that you all have sent. I look forward to unleashing them, particularly on the folks who now have come out in support of him,” former Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long posted on X/Twitter.
Good on Long for calling the haters out, and especially the two-faced people out there who are now switching up how they feel about Williams after one of the best performances of his career.
Caleb Williams is showing clear signs of growth in Ben Johnson’s offense
Williams is coming off a massive game against the Dallas Cowboys in which he totaled over 300 yards of offense, threw four touchdowns to four different pass catchers, had zero turnovers, and took zero sacks. It’s the kind of game the Bears knew one day would come from their starting quarterback.
“When the offensive line protects like that, it’s a lot easier to play from the pocket,” head coach Ben Johnson said. “He’s got the ability to escape and extend and all that, but man, if we can keep him in there, our playmakers are some dynamic route runners that we can get the ball to them in space. I think he saw when he plays on time, he’s trusting the hitches within his drops and we can be an explosive offense that way. There’s a lot of ways that Caleb Williams can hurt you, and like I said when we have pass protection like we had yesterday, that certainly helps.”
The overall situation Williams was surrounded with in Week 3 allowed him to play his best ball. We’re talking about a quarterback who was sacked 68 times in 2024 being able to stay clean and deliver on some big plays for all four quarters. Most important, Williams is showing growth running the offense.
“I thought he was good. And the thing that you don’t see on the stat sheet is he’s getting a lot more comfortable calling those plays in the huddle,” Johnson added. “We were able to get out of the huddle a little bit faster, and we were able to get on the line and operate a little bit cleaner as well. I was proud of him for that.”
But, before people like Kyle Long go crazy on the haters, it was one game against a pretty bad defense ran by the former Bears head coach. We need to see this kind of play turn into consistent play by Williams before fully diving on the wagon. It was an encouraging sign and I’m eager to see how Williams follows up that performance against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
