The week after the Super Bowl should be called silly season.
Because that's when the wild takes, crazy reports, and other related nonsense truly get bizarre.
And Chicago Bears fans are getting their taste of it this week.
NFL reporter Jason La Canfora suggested on Wednesday that "more than one general manager" left the Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL convinced that Bears quarterback Justin Fields will be traded.
Where do we even start?
The Bears almost certainly aren't trading Fields. You never say never in the NFL (no one thought the Tennessee Titans would trade wide receiver AJ Brown last season, but they foolishly did and then fired their general manager), but it's hard to imagine a scenario where trading Fields makes sense.
Fields showed last season that he can be one of the most electric players in the NFL despite not having any offensive weapons around him.
Building around Fields is an easy decision. Finding the quarterback is the hardest part of the rebuild. Chicago has that part figured out. So why would they deal the former Ohio State star?
If the Bears traded Fields, they'd be starting over again at the quarterback position. That would mean they'd have to take a quarterback with the No. 1 pick in the draft.
And there are no sure things in this draft. Bryce Young is talented, but he's severely undersized. CJ Stroud is far from a sure thing. Anthony Richardson is raw. And Will Levis might be the most overrated quarterback prospect I've ever seen.
Why would the Bears want to go down that road? Just so they could pick up an extra draft pick?
I'm not buying it. And Chicago fans shouldn't either. La Canfora has been wrong more than he's been right. None of the legitimate NFL insiders are passing along the same information, which tells us it's likely bogus.
Fields is the future for the Bears. Trading him away would be a massive misstep by general manager Ryan Poles.
But I don't see it happening. Poles has a plan and his plan has been to build around Fields. His play during the 2022 season essentially confirmed that it's the right plan for the Bears moving forward.
