Free agent chose Bears over two playoff teams
The Bears’ latest move provided clarity to an important position group.
The Bears' running back room will look much different in 2023.
David Montgomery, who had been the starter since 2019, recently signed with the division-rival Detroit Lions.
The loss of Montgomery led to a glaring hole at the position. However, NFL insider Adam Schefter is reporting that the team has moved to fill that hole.
Schefter is reporting that the Bears are in agreement with free agent RB D'Onta Foreman on a one-year, $3 million deal.
Interestingly, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston is reporting that Foreman chose the Bears over at least three other teams.
Wilson mentions the Bills and Giants as two of the teams with offers to Foreman. It is interesting that the back chose Chicago over a couple of playoff teams.
It can be assumed that Foreman chose Chicago due to playing time. Buffalo does not run often, and New York has Saquon Barkley returning.
Behind Foreman, the Bears have second-year back Khalil Herbert, Trestan Ebner, and the recently-signed Travis Homer. Foreman will most likely be the lead back, with Herbert getting his fair share of carries as well.
Foreman comes to Chicago after spending 2022 with the Carolina Panthers. Foreman became the lead back in Carolina after Christian McCaffrey was traded.
The back made the most out of the increased workload, finishing the season with 914 rush yards and five rushing TDs. Foreman also averaged an impressive 4.5 yards per carry.
While Foreman may not be a star, he will provide the Bears with a quality back who can make big plays. He also gives the Bears a reliable option if Herbert or Ebner fail to impress.
