General manager Ryan Poles has been busy this offseason.
After trading the number one pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Poles turned his attention to free agency. Tremaine Edmunds and Nate Davis highlight the additions made by the Bears in free agency.
While the roster has improved, it's important to remember that this team won all of three games in 2022- there's still much to improve.
With that being said, let's identify the three biggest areas of need for the Bears after the initial free agency wave.
Tackle/Center
I lumped these two together because I believe they both will need to be addressed.
Teven Jenkins is presumably switching back to right tackle, so that position is good. New addition Nate Davis and solid veteran Cody Whitehair will man the guard positions. This leaves the center and left tackle spots as question marks.
Braxton Jones had stretches of excellence in 2022, but I doubt he would prevent the Bears from seeking to upgrade here.
At center, the Bears currently have Lucas Patrick and Doug Kramer. Neither of these options probably instill much confidence.
If the Bears stay at pick nine, a player like Peter Skoronski makes a ton of sense at tackle. The Bears could then reunite Nate Davis with Ben Jones, his center in Tennessee.
Corner
Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson are very young and should have bright futures. Other than that? There's not much in this room that will excite you.
Kindle Vildor, Harrison Hand, Jaylon Jones, Michael Ojemudia, and Greg Stroman Jr. make up of the rest of the list. The group finished middle-of-the-pack against the pass in 2022, allowing an average of 218.6 passing yards per game.
There are several free agents still available, including Rock Ya-Sin, Tre Flowers, and Shaquill Griffin.
If the team decides to go corner with the ninth pick, Devon Witherspoon and Joey Porter Jr. are possible options.
Defensive end
No team in the NFL had less sacks than the Bears did in 2022. Jaquan Brisker led the team in sacks with four. Brisker is a safety, by the way.
Looking at the roster after the initial wave of free agency, and it's still unclear where the sacks are supposed to come from.
Trevis Gipson and Dominique Robinson are currently penciled in as the starting defensive ends, and neither of those players has much starting experience.
Gipson finished with three sacks in 2022, while Robinson had 1.5 as a rookie.
TJ Edwards is a new signing who will be the starting weakside linebacker. The most sacks Edwards has had in a season is two, so he probably won't contribute much to the pass rush.
It's clear that this is still an area of concern for the Bears.
Frank Clark is still available as a possible option, but he would be costly. Yannick Ngakoue and Rasheem Green are other possible free agent options.
Even if the Bears do add a veteran, I still expect at least one rookie pass-rusher to be brought in.
Final Thoughts: While the Bears have vastly improved this offseason, there is much work to be done.
The offensive line, secondary, and defensive line are still the biggest areas of need. With most of the big names gone, it seems unlikely that the Bears make any more splashes. However, Poles has shown that he isn't afraid to make a big trade.
