NFL makes the time official for the Week 16 matchup between Bears and Packers, showing how important that game will be
The Week 16 matchup is getting a national spotlight.
The Chicago Bears secured a massive victory on Black Friday over the Philadelphia Eagles, a win that not only kept them at the top of the NFC North, but eventually vaulted the team to the No. 1 seed in the NFC as a whole entering Week 14.
As good as it looks on paper, nothing is ever set in stone in this league until the regular season comes to a close and things can quickly come crashing down in a hurry for the Bears with the Green Bay Packers right on their heels.
“Doesn’t mean anything,” Bears head coach Ben Johnson said on Monday. “There’s five games left. We’ve got a long ways to go. We have not been guaranteed a spot in the tournament yet. We have to earn that right. And the only way you can earn that right is by finding a way to win the next game. That’s where our sole focus is.”
That next game happens to be the first of two matchups in a 13-day span against the Packers and the entire league knows how big these two games are. For Week 14, the NFL flexed the schedule, moving this upcoming matchup to the afternoon slate to get more eyes on this individual game. As for Week 16’s matchup, the time on the schedule has always been TBD and now we have an answer.
Bears-Packers matchup in Week 16 will be in a primetime slot with heavy NFC North implications
The NFL announced that the Week 16 matchup between the Bears and Packers will be played at 8:20 p.m. EST on Dec. 20. It’s a rare NFL Saturday slate and this matchup gets the night window with the Philadelphia Eagles set to face the Washington Commanders at 5:00 p.m. EST.
Putting this game in the late window was a easy call, even if both teams are in the central time zone. This is a must-watch game worthy of having the most attention possible given the current stakes in the NFC North because this could easily be a division-deciding game.
“The NFL is truly valuing the rivalry and what the Packers and Bears have to offer right now. After flexing their Week 14 game to the late afternoon window, the league is prioritizing their Week 16 matchup over a solid Eagles-Commanders game. It’s an interesting Saturday window, but the biggest wrinkle is that the rivals will face twice in a 13-day span.
That’s particularly intriguing for teams with head coaches like Matt LaFleur and Ben Johnson, schematic savants who tend to hyperfocus on gameplans and matchups to base their approach to games. It will be a fascinating Saturday night to understand how they will adjust less than two weeks after the first game, and if the same team is able to win both games, it will be extremely closer to a division championship and basically will have secured a playoff berth.” – Wendell Ferreira – A to Z Sports Green Bay
Either way, these two matchups between these bitter rivals are going to be huge for the entire conference. It starts on Sunday when the Bears travel to Lambeau Field, the same place they defeated the Packers the last time these two teams faced off back in Week 18 of the 2024 season.
