National media outlet thinks Bears may not be able to retain key free agent
The Bears could have to find a replacement for a key contributor.
The Chicago Bears have ample cap space heading into free agency.
As of this writing, the team has over $10 million more cap space than the next closest team. However, this doesn not necessarily mean the team will be able to retain all of their free agents.
According to ESPN, running back David Montgomery appears set to test the free agent market.
Per ESPN:
Chicago would like to re-sign running back David Montgomery, though as of now he appears poised to hit free agency.
As for lead back types, the Bears' Montgomery is probably the top one remaining
With Tony Pollard, Josh Jacobs, and Saquon Barkley all receiving the franchise tag, ESPN points out that Montgomery could be the only lead back type available.
The majority of teams see other free agent RBs such as Miles Sanders, Devin Singletary, and Raheem Mostert as "committee-type backs."
It is certainly not hard to understand why Montgomery could be in high-demand.
Since being selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Montgomery has eclipsed 800 rushing yards in every season. The back has also had 25+ receptions in each season.
In 2022, Montgomery led Bears' running backs in rushing yet again, with 801 yards and five TDs.
If Montgomery indeed walks, the Bears currently have Khalil Herbert and Trestan Ebner. Darrynton Evans is a restricted free agent, but is not a lock to return. Herbert impressed in 2022, finishing with 731 rushing yards and four TDs.
However, Herbert did not showcase the receiving ability that Montgomery has. Therefore, the Bears could be looking for a pass-catching back in the event Montgomery leaves. Options would include Devin Singletary in free agency, or perhaps the team would prefer to go the draft route.
One aspect in Chicago's favor is that, according to ESPN, the running back position is "not a position that teams are eager to pay."
This could mean Montgomery might not get the contract he is seeking elsewhere. If the back can't get a great offer, it would not be hard to see a return to Chicago for 2023.
