Chicago Bears rookie wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. found the endzone for the first time in his career in Sunday’s 29-22 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Jones took a pop pass from Justin Fields down the sideline for the nine-yard score. It was his only catch on the day, but it’s exactly how Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy should use the shifty rookie.
The team drafted Jones early in the third round of this year’s draft. His rare speed, which was on display in Sunday’s contest, can be used to stretch defenses vertically, but also spread the opposition apart forcing them to cover every blade of grass from sideline to sideline.
Many were disappointed with the coaching staff after Jones failed to log a single snap on offense in the team’s Week 4 loss to the New York Giants. However, it’s possible that the team was using caution with Jones after he missed the team’s first three games due to a hamstring injury.
It’s obvious that Jones gives the Bears’ offense, which has shown signs of improvement lately, some added flexibility with the playbook.
