Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles has demonstrated through his actions that he is attacking the team’s rebuild as he sees fit. Poles isn’t allowing mistakes from previous regimes to dictate how he structures this team for the future.
It’s clear that Poles wants to continue adding young cornerstones through the draft. By trading veterans Robert Quinn and Roquan Smith for future picks, Poles is setting the franchise up for a complete facelift.
“Obviously it helps to continue to build the way I want to build, which is through the draft”
When it comes to making these difficult decisions, Chicago's first-year general manager is up to the task.
“At the end of the day I’m the decision maker and the leader, and you gotta step up and make those decisions,” Poles told reporters on Tuesday.
While the Bears cashed in on multiple draft picks, the team used its own second-round pick in 2023 to acquire wide receiver Chase Claypool from the Pittsburgh Steelers. At 24 years old, Claypool fits the mold for what Chicago is looking for – talented young players on affordable contracts.
Loading up on young talent helps open windows for the future, and it allows the Bears' front office to go out and sign top free agents in the offseason. As it currently stands, the Bears have over $114 million in salary cap space for the 2023 season, per Spotrac.
There is no question that Poles has his hands full with re-tooling this broken roster. However, his aggressiveness and confident vision for the future are two things that could help the Bears get back on their feet faster than most expect.
