On Saturday, the Chicago Bears and the rest of the NFL watched the Dallas Cowboys trade wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns for….well almost nothing.

Dallas received a fifth-round pick (and swapped sixth-round picks with Cleveland) for Cooper.

The move was made by the Cowboys to clear salary cap space. If they wouldn't have been able to trade Cooper, they would've released him next week.

Chicago badly needs a wide receiver this offseason. Darnell Mooney is the only starting wide receiver currently on the depth chart (Allen Robinson is almost certainly leaving in free agency).

I think the Bears should've been in on Cooper at that price point. I know Chicago is undergoing a massive rebuild, but they still need to be competitive next year. And Cooper, one of the best route runners in the NFL, would've made quarterback Justin Fields and the rest of the Bears offense better.

Fortunately for Chicago, there's another trade option out there as a result of the Cooper trade that should be just as cheap. And I think the Bears need to do their due diligence.

After landing Cooper, the Browns have agreed to let wide receiver Jarvis Landry seek a trade.

Landry is a five-time Pro-Bowl wide receiver who has struggled a bit the last two seasons. But a lot of that has to do with his situation in Cleveland. If Landry gets out of Cleveland, he could thrive — much like Odell Beckham Jr did when he left the Browns for the Los Angeles Rams last season.

I think trading a late-round draft pick for Landry, who has one year remaining on his contract, and pairing him a free agent vertical threat like Will Fuller would give Fields a nice set of weapons. Mooney would be the go-to guy, Landry could be a move-the-chains type receiver and Fuller would be the deep ball threat. It's perfect.

There's also a bit of a connection between the Bears and Landry that could make this work.

Landry and Bears wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert both went to LSU. They never played together — Tolbert is older than Landry — but there's no doubt that they know each other well.

In fact, Tolbert badly wanted the Denver Broncos to draft Landry in 2014.

This would be a nice short-term move that makes the Bears better in 2022 while still providing financial flexibility in 2023 and beyond. I see no downside to Chicago exploring a trade for Landry.
