Through the first three weeks of the season, the Chicago Bears’ passing attack has been anemic.
Though the Bears (2-1) rank last in the NFL in passing yards per game (78.3), the offense could see a significant boost with a critical addition in this week’s matchup with the New York Giants (2-1).
The Bears’ 2022 third-round pick WR Velus Jones Jr. looks to be on track to make his NFL debut this weekend. Jones has taken part in the team’s practice every day this week, and even logged a full session on Friday.
It’s no secret that the Bears have struggled to utilize their receivers.
As it currently stands, five receivers in the NFL have more receptions than the entire Bears offense (23). Those players are Tyreek Hill (31), Cooper Kupp (28), Stefon Diggs (27), Ja’Marr Chase (25), and Marquise Brown (24).
Hill and Chase have each played four games, but the point remains.
Jones’ speed is his biggest asset for this Bears passing attack. Not only is he able to flash in the screen game, but he has the ability to take the top off of defenses.
When asked how he can help Fields, Jones replied with this:
"I can help him out a lot. That's why they drafted me early in the third round. That's really been on my mind. I've been visualizing that and manifesting, so when that day comes, I'm definitely going to out there."
Fields inability to connect on the deep ball is allowing safeties to creep up into the box and key on the run. Just attempting a couple of deep shots to Jones makes the defense account for the big play.
Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy must work alongside Fields to begin spreading the ball out to his playmakers. Jones adds an entirely different dimension that this offense must take advantage of in order to leave Sunday’s contest victorious.
