"Thought it would be a good idea to do the reunion."

That's what veteran safety Mike Edwards told reporters on Wednesday, speaking for the first time since he joined the Kansas City Chiefs for his second stint.

But this time is certainly different.

When he first signed with the Chiefs in 2023, he was coming off of his rookie contract, having spent the first four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"I feel like during the season, I was trying to get acclimated to the playbook and everything that comes with it being on a new team," Edwards explained. "Now, I feel like I kind of know everything about them."

"So it won't be too hard as far as like getting ready for a new team because I'm familiar with everything," he continued.

And with that, there is also one notable defender missing.

This offseason, Justin Reid signed a three-year, $31.5 million deal with the New Orleans Saints, leaving the Chiefs after three seasons. That also leaves a big gap in leadership.

"As far as like taking on that leadership role with J-Reid being gone, he's one of the select few guys who I know has that type of leadership style that he puts on and shares with his teammates and everything," Edwards said. "I tried to pick it up as best I can and follow his footsteps and try to take on that role, being on the older guy in the room.

"I feel like I can do that because I feel like I have the respect from my coaches and my fellow teammates," he added. "As soon as I get there, Day 1, I'll try to take on that role for sure."

He's already preparing for his role off the field, but as for on the field, he isn't sure what that will be yet. However, he acknowledged that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo always has a plan.
