Rival QB could impact Bengals’ biggest offseason priority
Recent news could affect Bengals’ star player.
Quarterback Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals can now negotiate a contract extension, and the team is totally on board with that.
There is no reason not to with Burrow leading the Bengals to back-to-back AFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl over the last two seasons.
However, something happened on Tuesday that could affect that.
The Baltimore Ravens placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Lamar Jackson. He can negotiate with other teams starting next week when the league year begins, and the Ravens can match any offer sheet or take two first-round picks in return.
But here's where it could get tricky for the Bengals.
If a sign and trade were to be executed when it comes to Jackson, his new deal would likely involve a ton of guaranteed money. The former MVP quarterback's negotiations with Baltimore have stalled over this all-important aspect of the deal.
Jackson reportedly turned down a $250 million deal including $133 million guaranteed before the 2022 regular season. The belief is he wants a fully guaranteed deal, which is what Deshaun Watson received this time last year from the Cleveland Browns.
Baltimore isn't prepared to give him that, as evidenced by the non-exclusive tag, but another team might be inclined once they get to negotiate with him.
This all comes down to timing. If Jackson lands a deal with a new team before Burrow inks an extension with Cincinnati, that adds another franchise quarterback receiving a fully guaranteed deal. That would undoubtedly impact negotiations between Burrow and the Bengals. After all, that's how the market works in the NFL.
Surely, the Bengals won't blink an eye when it comes to paying Burrow for what he's done on the football field, he's a stud. However, the NFL is a business at the end of the day, and Jackson could make things a little interesting when it comes to negotiations between the Burrow and the Bengals.
