It didn't take long for NFL defenses to respect Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase. The former fifth-overall pick has been a No. 1 receiver ever since he was 19 years old.
That status comes with the constant challenge of facing the best cornerback on the opposing team every single game.
Chase has seen quite a few top cornerbacks during his first 43 total games (including postseason), and his answer for the best one he's faced so far is one of the best.
In an interview with former NFL cornerback and two-time Pro Bowler Devin McCourty, Chase revealed that Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis has been the best corner he's faced. His rationale revolves entirely around what makes Davis special.
"For me, I'll say Carlton Davis," Chase said. "Only reason why I said Carlton Davis because he was longer than I expected, longer arms. He ain't got no knee bend, he just hunched his back over and just played defense. I think I played him twice, too, so he made some good plays on me. I ain't gone never forget that one."
Davis is a physical marvel at the position, standing 6-1 at 206 pounds, the sixth-year veteran boasts 32.75" arms and a wingspan of just under 80". He used that size to his advantage when the two last faced off in Week 15 of the 2022 season.
While covered by Davis, Chase managed to grab three of his eight targets for 32 yards, and was limited to four yards after the catch. Davis actually got his hands on just as many passes as he came away with two passes defensed and an interception.
Chase has been limited by other cornerbacks before, such as Patrick Surtain II and Denzel Ward, but Davis imposed his physicality in ways Chase hadn't seen before, and had the results to back it up.
Game recognize game.
