It'll be tough for Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase to follow a record-breaking performance from last week, but the Seattle Seahawks may've given him the boost he needs to do it.
Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf gave Chase high praise when talking about his three-touchdown outing last Sunday against the Cardinals, but added that rookie cornerback and teammate Devon Witherspoon "will get the best of him."
The ole bulletin board material debate rears its ugly head once more.
Metcalf is a phenomenal player, and Witherspoon is off to a great start in his career. The fifth pick in the 2023 NFL Draft already has an interception and three pass breakups to his name after just three games played. He's also been superb against the run, totaling 10 defensive stops, and has two sacks as well.
For a 22-year old rookie, that's crazy production after just 12 quarters of football.
Metcalf goes up against Witherspoon every day in practice, though he hasn't so far this week considering he's on the injury report with a rib injury. There's absolutely nothing wrong with touting up your teammate ahead of a great matchup.
There's also nothing wrong with Chase using this as motivation to make him eat his words.
For as talented as Witherspoon clearly is, Chase is one of the best offensive players in the NFL. Period. He's battled and beaten great cornerbacks before, and he'll do so again for a while.
It should be noted that Witherspoon has mostly played left cornerback in the Seahawks' defense, but played a healthy amount in the slot during his last game in Week 4 against the New York Giants. Chase has also been moved to the slot often this season, but has mainly taken snaps against the right cornerback this year.
At some point, the two will match up against one another, and the pressure is on Witherspoon to live up to Metcalf's words. Chase will be sure to give him his best.
