The rivalry between the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs got closer to even this past year when the Chiefs ended the Bengals' return trip to the Super Bowl with a Chris Jones sack on Joe Burrow.
It was not just the last snap Burrow took for the season, it was a "full circle" moment for Jones.
In an appearance on the New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce podcast, Jones said he had Burrow's head painted on tackling dummies during the 2022 offseason following the AFC Championship game, citing Burrow's post on Instagram following the game that featured the Bengals quarterback evading him during the game as fuel.
Jones never forgot the post, or the thought of Burrow escaping his grasp in the most important game of the season.
"It happened like full circle honestly cause I'm like, f—–g my whole offseason I'm training, thinking about Joe Burrow," Jones said. "I had them f—–g paint pictures of Joe Burrow on the f—–g, the dummies I was slapping, I swear to God."
Sounds like he took it personally.
"I needed it. I wanted nothing more than just that moment again. I wanted nothing more. And it happened, bro."
Yep, he did.
Jones got his revenge in a dominant performance. The All-Pro finished with 10 pressures, two sacks, and five hits on Burrow in that game. Cincinnati was down three starters, including both their right tackle and right guard, and they certainly paid the price against one of the best defensive players in all of football.
Now, it's the Bengals looking for revenge. They'll face the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium again this season on New Year's Eve.
You can bet that Jones will want more cracks at Burrow, and Burrow will want to evade Jones like he did two AFC title games ago.
