Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow recently made a decision, in conjunction with Cincy's front office, that means fans will be in the dark this offseason.
Burrow, who is entering his fourth season in the NFL (that's legitimately hard to believe, by the way), is expected to receive a contract extension this offseason.
And that extension is expected to be extremely lucrative.
There's no timetable for the extension to be worked out. And Bengals fans shouldn't expect to hear any details about the negotiations leaked.
That's because Burrow and the Cincinnati front office have agreed to keep talks as quiet as possible to avoid any information being leaked to the media.
Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn said this week that Burrow and the Bengals have had preliminary contract discussions, but she declined to go into further detail.
"I don't know the pace but we hope that there's something that can get done," said Blackburn. "We sort of said we won't talk about it much until there's something to talk about."
That's a smart move by both sides. While it's clear that Burrow wants to be in Cincinnati longterm, and the Bengals obviously want him to be their franchise quarterback for the next decade-plus, this is still a business. And negotiations don't always go smoothly. There will be some areas where both sides don't see eye to eye. But that's typical. The fewer details that are leaked, the fewer chances there are that a negative narrative surrounding Burrow and the Bengals will form.
Burrow is handling this situation perfectly — though isn't that what everyone expected? He's been nothing short of a perfect teammate during his time in Cincinnati and fans shouldn't expect that to change anytime soon.
