When Joe Burrow went down with a wrist injury that will keep him sidelined for the rest of the season, most folks — especially national analysts — immediately marked the Cincinnati Bengals off their list of playoff contenders.
But the players inside of Cincinnati's locker room don't feel that way. There's a real belief that this team, even without their superstar quarterback, can earn a playoff spot.
And that's something that Bengals star running back Joe Mixon reiterated this week.
"Bro, we can do this, we are still the Bengals," said Mixon on Thursday. "Nobody (in the locker room) is feeling sorry for themselves….everybody is like let's go, we're still in it."
"We can play up there with the best of them, I don't care who it is," added Mixon.
The Bengals are 6-6 and currently one game out of a playoff spot. They received some help on Thursday night via the New England Patriots' win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Patriots' win dropped the Steelers' record to 7-6.
The last three playoff spots are currently occupied by three 7-5 teams — the Cleveland Browns, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Houston Texans.
Cincinnati plays the Colts on Sunday in what's essentially a must-win game for both franchises. If the Bengals can knock off the Colts, making the playoffs will suddenly look like a very real possibility for Cincinnati.
