The Cincinnati Bengals made what appeared to be a confusing roster move ahead of their game against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.
Cincinnati elevated quarterback Jake Browning from the practice squad to the active roster before Monday night's game.
Browning, however, wasn't activated for the game. He was listed as inactive.
Strange, right?
Well, there was actually a pretty smart reason for the move.
According to The Athletic's Paul Dehner Jr, the Bengals really like Browning and they want him to be part of the team's future. This move was so he could get a game check and be "invested" in the team.
The plan is obviously for Joe Burrow to be the starter in Cincinnati for the next decade-plus, but having a quality backup quarterback is important, too.
Browning, who spent three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings before landing with the Bengals last year, has yet to throw a pass in a regular season game. But it looks like he might have a role as a longterm backup quarterback in Cincy.
Backing up Burrow isn't a bad gig. In fact, it might be one of the best jobs on the planet.
