Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon made his first court appearance Wednesday morning and plead not guilty to a charge of aggravated menacing.

Mixon is being accused of waving a firearm in the direction of a woman and threatening to shoot her on the night of January 21. According to an affidavit, Mixon stated "You should be popped in the face. I should shoot you, the police can't (sic) get me," to the alleged victim.

Mixon's attorneys requested a jury trial for a later date, and the judge issued a $10,000 unsecured bond.

According to Cincinnati's WCPO, Mixon is scheduled to be appear in court next on May 3 at 9am, two weeks after his initial appearance. Mixon is to have no contact with the prosecuting witness.

"It is our belief that this case should be tried in the court, not in the press. We will therefore be making no further public statements in reference to this matter." – Mixon's attorneys Scott Croswell and Merlyn Shiverdecker

The charge of aggravated menacing was originally filed against Mixon on February 2, and was subsequently dropped a day later with the possibility of a re-filing. On April 7, Cincinnati Police Department re-filed the charge on account of "discovery of new evidence." The charge is a first-degree misdemeanor and could carry a maximum sentence of 180 days, a maximum fine of $1000 and a maximum of five years of probation in Ohio.

Mixon reported with his teammates to voluntary workouts this week, but had no comment on his legal case or his future with the team other than exclaiming ""Year seven, back at it! Let's get it!"
