Bengals eliminating one quarterback as possible Jake Browning replacement means another move is imminent
A potential sign of things to come for Cincinnati.
As the Cincinnati Bengals ponder what to do at quarterback, one potential option has seemingly been eliminated from consideration.
Cincinnati has released QB Mike White from its practice squad, and rookie defensive tackle Howard Cross III has been signed to replace him.
White was originally signed to the practice squad days after Joe Burrow suffered his turf toe injury. The club also signed Sean Clifford as well, and both became extra arms behind starter Jake Browning and backup Brett Rypien with Burrow going to the Reserve/Injured list.
Head coach Zac Taylor confirmed the team is evaluating its options at the QB position. Browning has lost all three of his starts and has produced like one of the worst starters in the NFL since taking over for Burrow in Week 2. Removing White from the building could very well be looked at as clearing room for a new option to replace, or at least challenge, Browning going forward.
Bengals appear willing to add outside name to replace Jake Browning
If the Bengals are going to sign, or trade for, a new QB this week, it makes sense to clear a spot for him in the locker room. Five QBs is pretty much overkill as there’s only so many reps to go around.
Will they trade for a former starter who’s now a backup like Russell Wilson or Jameis Winston? Will they sign a free agent like Taylor Heinicke? All of that remains up in the air, but releasing White now does make a move more likely to happen sooner than later.
Cross was waived last Friday by the Bengals. The team claimed Jordan Jefferson off waivers, and Cross was waived as corresponding move. Being that he’s a rookie who went undrafted, it was likely he would clear waivers and be able to return to the practice squad. Cross made the initial 53-man roster and has played in one game this season.
