The Cincinnati Bengals have an interesting situation at the running back position.

Samaje Perine, who was the primary backup to Joe Mixon, is now with the Denver Broncos. Mixon's future is currently murky with all of his off-the-field incidents. So, that leaves veteran Trayveon Williams, who re-signed on a one-year deal last month.

With everything that's going on at running back in Cincinnati, Williams has a big opportunity to hopefully showcase more of his abilities. That's exactly what he's eager to do this upcoming season.

"In years past, it's kind of been scratching and clawing just to stay on the team," Williams said, via the team's website. "Now there's a bigger opportunity with a little opening in the running back room. A bigger role. A bigger adjustment. I think I'm ready to make that adjustment."

Williams was a sixth-round pick of the Bengals in 2019. During his first four campaigns, he's only run the ball 47 times for 238 yards and has yet to reach the end zone.

Despite his lack of productivity, Williams was approached by other teams for his services this offseason. However, the former college football All-American decided to return to Cincinnati, and he explained why.

"There were some other teams coming at me," said Williams. "I just made what I felt was the best decision for my future. I kind of dug my feet in and helped build the foundation here. It shows I'm buying in. They trust me like I trust them. It's a mutual decision. They wanted me back as much as I wanted to be back."

Williams is right about that.

Bengals' head coach Zac Taylor's first season with the team was the same as Williams's. Over the first two years, the Bengals only won six games combined. Since 2021, the Bengals have been one of the NFL's best teams with back-to-back AFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl berth over that span.

So, Williams has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly in Cincinnati.

If Mixon does return, Williams can at minimum carve out a larger reserve role if anything. Regardless, it's all in front of him in 2023 to be a bigger part of what the Bengals do offensively and make his name more known on a league-wide scale.
