It had been over a month since the Cincinnati Bengals last celebrated a victory. Defeating the Dallas Cowboys, 27-20, on "Monday Night Football" brought some jubilation back to the players, especially for the stars of the team.
While quarterback Joe Burrow finally got to talk about a win after another productive game from him, wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase snuck up behind him, equipped with a classic Homer Simpson pink donut and shoved it in his face.
Just minutes before Burrow's 28th birthday, nonetheless.
Chase had to wait until Burrow's on-field interview completed, and then allowed his QB to get him back with another donut. You can't have a football game themed after The Simpsons without some pink-colored pastries, of course.
Burrow and Chase deserved to indulge a little bit after their performances. Burrow threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns to just one interception. 177 of those yards and two of those touchdowns found the hands of Chase. The former is still the NFL's leader in passing yards and touchdowns. The latter remains atop the leaderboard in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns.
Now a 28-year old, Burrow has four games left to will the Bengals back into the playoff picture in a muddied AFC. The Athletic has them at a 2% chance after Monday night's win put them three games back from the final wild card spot. Never say die when he's got his #1 target with him.
"He's a special player," Burrow said of Chase after the game. "He continues to make plays after the catch, before the catch, any way that you get him the ball he makes plays. He deserves all he's gonna get and more."
That last sentence of course is referring to the contract Chase will inevitably sign. So long as the Bengals are the ones who drafted the document, Burrow will accept the donut to the face for a birthday present.
Bengals finally catch a lucky break and it was all possible thanks to a familiar face
Madness ensued at the end of the Bengals’ win over the Cowboys, and a former Cincinnati player was the cause of it.
