Ja’Marr Chase gives Bengals fans a special callback after witnessing one of the best highlights of Tee Higgins’ career
Ja’Marr Chase ups his praise for Tee Higgins.
Ja’Marr Chase is accustomed to scoring the most touchdowns for the Cincinnati Bengals, but there are ample times in which he gets to witness Tee Higgins put six points on the board. He saw it twice last Sunday in Cincinnati’s loss to the Chicago Bears, but one of them stood out more than the other.
Higgins snatched a deep pass from quarterback Joe Flacco down the left sideline in front of Bears cornerback Nashon Wright. Higgins scampered into the end zone as Wright fell to the ground, which is also where Chase’s jaw was upon seeing the play.
After the touchdown, Chase, who was mic’d up for the game, told the camera what Higgins is.
“Receiver 1,” Chase exclaimed. “Not 1A.”
This is effusive praise for Higgins, but it also carries a lot more meaning from Chase when considering what he said earlier this year.
Ja’Marr Chase delivers a callback seven months in the making
Chase and Higgins made headlines back in March when they signed massive contract extensions with the Bengals at the same time. Higgins had hired Chase’s agent, Rocky Arceneaux, in order to combine forces and exercise leverage against the club to get a deal done.
Signing together led to a joint press conference afterwards, in which Higgins was asked about being a No. 2 receiver on the same team as Chase, who was paid significantly more to pair with his triple crown title. Chase didn’t let Higgins answer before making sure the media referred to Higgins as not a No. 2, but something more.
“1A,” Chase said.
Nearly eight months later, Chase went a step further calling him a straight-up “Receiver 1.” Who could blame him after seeing that catch?
Higgins finished the game with 121 receiving yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions. Chase followed closely behind him with 11 yards on six catches. The latter typically out-produces the former, but when two No. 1s are on the field together, you never know which one is liable to pop off.
No longer 1 and 1A, but 1 and 1.
