Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow didn't just excel on the football field as a teenager in Southeast Ohio — he was also a ridiculously talented basketball player.
The former LSU standout started all four seasons for his varsity basketball team at Athens High School. And his former high school coach said he would've started as an eighth grader if it would've been allowed.
"If he was allowed to play in eighth grade, he would have started for us for five years. He was that good," said Jeff Skinner, Burrow's high school basketball coach, in early 2022.
On Sunday, in the Bengals' 31-17 win against the San Francisco 49ers, Burrow used those legendary basketball skills to make Nick Bosa, the 2022 NFL defensive player of the year, look silly.
On one play, Burrow evaded pressure from Bosa by hitting the feared pass rusher with a lethal crossover move that looked like it was straight from a Tim Hardaway mix tape.
For starters, that's incredibly impressive from Burrow. The ability to break that move out while under duress shows the elite athleticism that Burrow possesses.
Secondly, this is just another reason why young kids/teenagers shouldn't specialize in one sport (which is an absurd trend that we're seeing start earlier and earlier). We constantly see how baseball skills and basketball skills translate to the gridiron. At the end of the day, you just gotta be an athlete out there sometimes. And that's clearly a skill that Burrow has in his toolbox.
