Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow might have some competition at the quarterback position from an unlikely teammate.
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor pointed out this week that wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase knows how to play all of the skill positions on the offensive side of the ball, including quarterback.
Taylor even insinuated that Cincinnati might put Chase "back there" at quarterback at some point.
"Ja'Marr immediately understands the full picture of the full route concept, the formation, why we're doing things with him," said Taylor (via Mike Petraglia). "And so it allows you to be more aggressive with how you want to use him because of his ability to take it all in and go execute it. And if he was struggling with that we wouldn't do all this. You maybe do one or two things with him but he has worked hard enough to put himself at all five positions, maybe quarterback. Maybe six. Maybe we'll put him back there at some point. But he's done a really good job with his approach and his understanding of what we're trying to achieve."
Obviously Taylor isn't talking about Chase taking a bunch of snaps at quarterback instead of Burrow. But it certainly seems possible that a couple of designed plays with Chase at quarterback/taking a snap could be in the works. If it's something that helps the offense move the ball down the field, I'm sure Taylor and the Bengals will seriously consider it.
Chase, by the way, is clearly putting in a ridiculous amount of work in — on and off the field — in an effort to understand what everyone's job is supposed to be. And it's paying off.
By the way, Chase took some wildcats snaps during his time at Archbishop Rommel in high school, so it wouldn't be a foreign concept for the superstar wide receiver to line up at quarterback.

It’s definitely not one we were expecting to see
