The Cleveland Browns have a big decision coming up next month with what they want to do with their first pick in the draft.
After not having a first-round pick the last three seasons, the Browns must capitalize on the No. 2 overall pick to help get out of the hole they're in.
Cleveland still has to get the quarterback position right but they aren’t forced to take one at No. 2. Other draft prospects like Colorado’s Travis Hunter and Penn State’s Abdul Carter are in the mix to be selected by Cleveland. Carter recently made an interesting comment regarding how elite defenders impact the game just as much as quarterbacks.
“Those great defensive players, you [take a] look in the history, they can impact the game just as much as a quarterback,” Carter said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN. “There’s been defensive players who’ve taken over a game right at the end of Super Bowl, those playoff scenes where you really need that great defensive player and he also makes people around him better.
"So, I feel like just saying that seeing how defensive players can take over a game, we’re just like a quarterback.”
Carter is looked at as potentially the best talent available in the draft and would likely go No. 1 overall if it weren’t for the Tennessee Titans needing a quarterback. Carter has spent just one full season at EDGE and he was an All-American with the Nittany Lions. He racked up 12 sacks, 68 tackles, and 24 of those were for a loss.
Cleveland already has an elite defender and game-wrecker on defense with Myles Garrett, but they could pair him with another potential one in Carter. Still, Cleveland needs to find competent quarterback play. What they put out there last year was the opposite of that.
Carter has a good point and he may end up being one of those players on defense that can change games. Just over three weeks left to see if the Browns pull the trigger on selecting him.
