The Cleveland Browns are 2-6 coming out of the bye week, and Sunday’s game against the New York Jets will be a chance for them to pick up a much-needed win. Cleveland laid a stinker against the New England Patriots before the bye, and their two lone victories this season have come against the Green Bay Packers and Miami Dolphins.

Off the field, the Browns just experienced a major shakeup in their front office with the loss of a 10-year executive within the franchise.

Paul DePodesta is leaving the Browns for the Colorado Rockies

According to Ken Rosenthal, DePodesta is set to leave the Browns and become the head of baseball operations for the Colorado Rockies. DePodesta has spent the last 10 seasons with the Browns, during which the team has gone 56-99-1. During his tenure, the Browns employed three head coaches — Hue Jackson, Freddie Kitchens, and Kevin Stefanski — with little success until Stefanski’s arrival. DePodesta signed a five-year extension in 2021, and according to Rosenthal, he had been in discussions with the Rockies about the position for roughly a month.

DePodesta brings plenty of baseball experience to Colorado. He previously served as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ general manager in 2004 and was with the organization for less than two years before being dismissed. Over the years, he’s also held roles with the Cleveland Indians, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, and New York Mets.

Hiring DePodesta marked a major philosophical shift for the Browns — from a traditional football mindset to a more analytics-driven approach. While the franchise has made progress in recent years, including its first playoff appearances in decades, the Browns remain in a precarious position not far removed from their 1-15 and 0-16 seasons, both of which occurred during DePodesta’s tenure. This is an unexpected loss for the Browns at this point in the season, but perhaps a parting that was inevitable. DePodesta returns to his baseball roots, and the Browns are now faced with filling a key executive role in their organization.
