Cleveland Browns’ first move of the week during the opening of free agency wasn’t a signing. Instead, they sent Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a fifth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for QB Kenny Pickett.
Pickett was not a quarterback that many had on the radar of the Browns, but that’s how it normally works out. The former Pittsburgh Steelers QB is the first part of the puzzle that is reshaping the quarterback room.
The former first-round pick met with the local media for the first time on Thursday and may have revealed what the Browns are doing next at quarterback.
Kenny Pickett views himself as a starter, reveals the Browns aren’t done at quarterback yet
"I do view myself as a starter," Pickett said during his introductory press conference on Thursday afternoon. "I'm sure they're going to bring in another veteran, and who knows what else after that. But you know, I am excited to be here and compete with whoever."
Many believed that the move for Pickett was the first of at least three new quarterbacks in Cleveland this offseason. Jameis Winston was on just a one-year deal last season and Deshaun Watson isn’t expected to take a snap in 2025 while recovering from an Achilles injury. Some worried that Pickett was in place to be the bridge, then the team would bring in a rookie.
That won’t be the case, as the Browns look poised to bring in a true bridge option. They’ve already met with QB Russell Wilson and he will meet with the New York Giants next. Kirk Cousins could eventually become available, but for now, he is still with the Atlanta Falcons. Other names out there like Gardner Minshew and Aaron Rodgers exist, too.
Pickett doesn’t see an issue with other quarterbacks coming in and is looking for another chance to be the guy. The former Pittsburgh starter is heading into year No. 4 and his last season before he is a free agent.
"It's fine with me," said Pickett regarding other competition coming in. "As long as I have a chance to compete, that is all you can ask for. So, having that opportunity is awesome as a player. I'm looking forward to working with whoever comes into the building."
Cleveland is going to turn over every rock when looking for additions to the quarterback room. The front office and coaching staff need to figure this thing out, or jobs could be lost in 2025. Pickett all but confirms eyes should be peeled for another veteran coming in soon.
