Cowboys’ Brandon Aubrey reveals secret that makes heroic performance vs Giants even more difficult to believe
The Dallas Cowboys kicker is rewriting NFL history without even breaking down film.
Brandon Aubrey is more than just the Dallas Cowboys kicker. He’s an author of NFL history.
Since arriving to the NFL in 2023, he’s been breaking records left and right. Last year, he made 14 field goals from 50-plus yards, ever in single-season NFL history. As a rookie, he kickstarted his career with 35 consecutive field goals, the most without a miss for any kicker ever. He now has four field goals of 60+ yards, tied for most in league history alongside Brett Maher.
He is not, however, a technician, as he recently revealed during an interview with The Pat McAfee Show. When asking about the 64-yard field goal that sent Sunday’s matchup between the Cowboys and Giants to overtime, McAfee pointed out Aubrey’s ball flight was different than usual. Aubrey’s insight into his process makes his performance even more unbelievable.
Aubrey reveals he doesn’t even watch his own film
“That’s just a little power fade, I was just trying to add a little bit more to it and kind of came off my foot a little funky and it had that little slide and I got nervous for a second, but then it corrected itself and got back on its path,” Aubrey said. “I don’t really try to do it, but when we get back there, I’ve started to notice I do take that little hitch step to give myself a little bit more behind the ball. But yeah, I don’t try to do it. I’m more of a feel kicker. I don’t watch a whole lot of film of myself. If you pay attention closely, not any single kick is exactly the same for me as the last one. There’s a lot of times, especially early in the season where my soccer form takes back over and I kind of land on my kicking foot and those are the ones I try to get away from because those are bad. But they they tend to still go in.”
That’s an All-Pro kicker currently building his resume to enter the G.O.A.T. conversation telling you he doesn’t even watch film on himself. He just tries. And succeeds. Some athletes are just special. To Aubrey, just trying without thinking to much about it is more beneficial than harmful.
“You don’t want to be back in your steps right before you kick and be like, ‘Wow, I missed my spot by like half an inch. How do I have to recover from this?’ You just want to turn your brain off and kick the freaking ball,” Aubrey added.
Jerry Jones says Cowboys will look into a Brandon Aubrey extension
Aubrey is due for restricted free agency in 2026, which makes him eligible for a contract extension. On Tuesday, Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan the team will look into the possibility of getting a deal done. The Cowboys have already signed left guard Tyler Smith to an in-season extension worth $96 million.
“We’ll be looking at that,” Jones said on the radio. “Probably have had communications since the kick. But he’s certainly in the future.”
