Even when the games are done, NFL coaches don't get a lot of time off. So it's easy to understand why Brian Schottenheimer's wife didn't love the way he spent time in the thick of the offseason.
However, it's a habit that might be the top reason why Schottenheimer succeeds as the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys: Searching for hidden gems of the coaching world.
"This is something that I've done for a long time which is spend the offseason, the summer, my wife gets mad at me but tracking coaches," Schottenheimer told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine.
A to Z Sports' own Travis May has you covered with the clip:
The key, however, is in the fact that he didn't track the guys he's known forever but those he didn't even know about.
"I literally called guys in the business that I know and that I trust and I'm like 'tell me somebody that maybe you think the world of but that I've never heard of," Schottenheimer revealed. "It's such a close-knit fraternity that guys are happy to share good people with good people."
Considering Schottenheimer was a surprise head coaching hire, that's a powerful offseason habit that kept him ready for the moment he finds himself in.
Schottennheimer noted there's not many "old pals" of his on his recently-built Cowboys coaching staff. Now granted, that doesn't mean they're there just because someone told him about them. After due diligence, the head coach focused on one priority: Fundamentals.
"If you look at all the coaches that we've added both young and old, the ability to train fundamentals and the developmental process of our players is critical," Schottenheimer said.
While he didn't use those words himself in that answer, Schottenheimer's staff all talked about implementing a physical and violent approach to football on the field. That's likely why Schottenheimer added an exciting soundbite before finishing his answer on the staff by saying:
"One last thing, I know for a fact our players are going to feel the passion and energy of this staff, this staff is awesome, in terms of the energy, the way they want to teach, the way they want to be in the grass. I can't wait to see us get to work in a couple of months."
