The Cowboys may have something special in Brian Schottenheimer and a postgame locker room moment shows exactly why
The Cowboys head coach is clearly beloved by his players.
Brian Schottenheimer has made no effort to hide the fact that he’s an emotional guy since becoming head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
Following the first win of his career at the helm of an NFL team—a dramatic 40-37 showdown against the New York Giants—Schottenheimer didn’t want to share with reporters what Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott told him when he handed the coach a game ball postgame.
“If I tried to spit it out, I’d cry,” Schottenheimer told reporters. “And I don’t feel like crying right now.”
Prescott’s message remains an in-house mystery but the Cowboys posted a locker room clip of the moment on social media. And I have to say, though it’s only a locker room celebration, it’s a telling one. Who knows if Schottenheimer will be a good head coach or not. It’s too early to tell. But one thing is for sure: It means the world to him to be leading the team and if we notice that, players do too.
The clip begins right as Prescott finishes his message for Schottenheimer, who gets emotional as the team around him celebrates his first win. He then goes on to lead the celebration for every player who made a big play on Sunday. Watch the clip below and tell me the players’ excitement doesn’t come off as genuine. They love the guy. That matters for a football team.
I hesitate to make the comparison because they’re both very different, but Schottenheimer appears to have a Dan Campbell-esque kind of energy going on in his locker room. The Detroit Lions head coach has become known for how passionate and emotional he is. Though they both show it in different ways, they’re transparent around their players.
Not every NFL coach gets visibly emotional in front of his players. Not every roster gets genuinely excited for their coach’s first win. This team knows how much he cares, and it makes them care, as well. It might not be an indication of what his win-loss record will be as a head coach when it’s all said and done, but right now, it looks like evidence of the culture he’s preached about since January.
“We’re behind him,” Prescott told reporters of the moment. “He deserved that first win. Tough one to get. Fun one to get. I know he’ll never forget it. I won’t forget it.”
