With no CeeDee Lamb on the field to start training camp, the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver room has had its fair share of opportunities to stand out in Oxnard, California in two days of practice so far.

One of them seems to already be standing out from the pack of wide receivers considered longshots to make the 53-man roster: Tyron Billy-Johnson.

In the words of DallasCowboys.com writer Nick Harris, Billy-Johnson has had a strong first two days of camp. That includes a nice diving grab in which he worked back to the ball outside the numbers with second-year cornerback Eric Scott Jr. playing sticky coverage. Billy-Johnson generated separation and secured the football going to the ground.

On another play from Friday's practice, Billy-Johnson worked across the field on a horizontal route off of a play-action concept. The veteran wide receiver appears to be getting a lot of reps with the first-team, which should be considered an encouraging sign for him.

On the Cowboys' first practice, Dak Prescott found Billy-Johnson on a deep ball near the sidelines, challenging cornerback Nahshon Wright in the process. The receiver showed awareness with his footwork to stay in-bounds.

Billy-Johnson, like many others, faces an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster. If the entire unit remains healthy, it would seem like the Cowboys have their Top 6 set in stone:

  • CeeDee Lamb
  • Brandin Cooks
  • Jalen Tolbert
  • Jalen Brooks
  • KaVontae Turpin
  • Ryan Flournoy (sixth-round rookie)

The veteran wide out, who has spent time with seven NFL teams since going undrafted in 2019, will also face competition from younger prospects at the position, such as David Durden. The question becomes, how much does the 28-year-old Billy-Johnson need to do to get on the mix or at the very least, become a priority target for the team's practice squad?
