The Dallas Cowboys legend is taking on a new challenge at the SEC level. And I expect Jerry Jones to be paying close attention.

Can you imagine Jason Witten coaching for the Dallas Cowboys in the future? Because I sure can, and the latest news surrounding the future Hall of Famer only makes it likelier.

It’s no secret the Cowboys, particularly owner Jerry Jones, have day dreamed about the possibility of Witten coaching for the team. Last year, reports even emerged on him potentially joining the staff in Dallas, where he put together a legendary career as a player. But now, Witten is taking a major step in his coaching career that makes everything make a bit more sense.

Witten lands a job with Oklahoma Sooners

Witten—who has coached at the high school level for the last few years at Liberty Christian—is being hired by the Sooners as TE coach. After amassing a 35-5 record as a high school coach, Witten is about to coach SEC football. And though it’s a position coach job, it’s a major step for him if he’s interested in climbing the ranks over the years.

Witten has a chance to leave a mark, as he will be asked to overhaul the TE room for the Sooners.

“With the Sooners, Witten will oversee a room undergoing a complete makeover,” wrote my colleague AJ Schulte of A to Z Sports Oklahoma. “Oklahoma, through graduations and transfers (processing the room), has lost their top four (and maybe five soon) tight ends from 2025. However, they have already taken steps to add two big time players in Hayden Hansen and Rocky Beers to pair with two freshmen the Sooners are high on in Tyler Ruxer and Ryder Mix.”

An important step toward coaching the Cowboys?

Here’s the thing: Over the years, Jerry Jones has repeatedly talked about Witten as a potential coach at the NFL level, even comparing him to Dan Campbell, who has been successful as a head coach for the Detroit Lions.

Last year, Jane Slater from NFL Network reported Witten was being considered to be a part of Mike McCarthy’s staff before the latter decided to part ways with the team. Back then, Slater described the potential reunion as setting Witten up as a potential “heir apparent of sorts.”

The idea was always perceived by many to be a flawed one because of Witten’s lack of coaching experience. Before Campbell became head coach, he started his coaching career in 2010 as an intern for the Miami Dolphins. He later became TE coach for the Dolphins and then New Orleans Saints before rising to head coach in 2021. It took him a decade’s worth of experience in the NFL.

Though Witten won’t be coaching in the pros, he will be doing so in one of the biggest stages college football has to offer.
