Broncos’ Bo Nix and Sean Payton break their silence on heated sideline exchange during Week 2 loss vs. Indianapolis Colts
The sideline exchange went viral for all the wrong reasons.
In the Denver Broncos’ heartbreaking Week 2 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, a sideline moment between head coach Sean Payton and second-year quarterback Bo Nix drew the attention of fans and critics alike on social media. The now-viral moment was one of the main points of conversation on Wednesday, with Payton and Nix dismissing any notion that there’s a rift between the pair.
Payton opened up to the media and was clearly flustered. The head coach quickly shut down a reporter questioning if it was a common occurrence between him and Nix.
“I saw what you guys saw,” Payton said. “Look, that wasn’t what it appeared, though. It was an affirmation of ‘This is what we’re wanting to do.’ I was looking at it and trying to think. I think it was more about excitement, but I saw it. It was following, I think, a series where we ran it pretty well. Yeah, I don’t recall it ever being, I would know if there was ever one of those moments. I guess what I’m saying is, I don’t think it was what it appeared. In fact, I know it wasn’t.”
Bo Nix speaks up about viral sideline moment with Payton
Nix spoke up about the viral incident as well, providing a little more insight as to what exactly happened between the two during the sideline interaction. All water under the bridge, and not a big deal at all from the response Nix gave to the media. Stating that people are making a bigger deal out of it than it really was.
“I think for whatever reason, we’re allowing conversations to become bigger than what they are,” Nix said. “We often time forget that it’s a big stadium and a lot of people are talking at the same time so you gotta be a little bit louder and more vocal. So, that was just something as simple as he asked me what happened on a play, I told him, I turned and he couldn’t quite hear. Turned back and told him again, there was no issues. Just a quick conversation with my head coach, nothing pressing.”
Frustrations were high in the contest in a game that felt as though it was ripped away from the Broncos. After the loss, the head coach and quarterback made it clear that there’s no bad blood in the organization and their relationship remains strong.
Denver looks to bounce back against the Chargers in Week 3
Denver is going to try to get the sour taste out of its mouth after the last-second loss to the Colts with an upcoming divisional showdown against the Chargers set for Sunday. Another viral moment like this, and it would be difficult for Payton or Nix to avoid any of the media onslaught that would inevitably follow.
Payton and Nix say everything is right as rain with the organization, firmly dismissing any idea that it was anything other than a misunderstanding from anyone watching the viral interaction.
It hasn’t been an ideal start to the season for the Broncos, for more than one reason, but there’s plenty of time to turn things around. Any more distractions could quickly derail them further.
