Broncos assistant coach gets brutally honest about Week 1 performance vs. Tennessee Titans
You love to see it.
The Denver Broncos are undefeated after a low-scoring affair against the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 of the NFL season. Denver’s defense came to play and made life miserable for Cam Ward in his NFL debut, sacking him six times. Patrick Surtain and Riley Moss were dominant, while Surtain didn’t allow a single reception all game.
However, the same can’t be said about the offense. Bo Nix and the team struggled with some turnover issues, but ultimately did enough to secure the 20-12 victory. At the end of the day, a win is a win, and the team knows they have plenty to correct. Lombardi shared his thoughts on the performance on Thursday, sharing those exact sentiments.
“Expected better,” Lombardi said. “Turnovers are always a huge thing and not something we expect, but they happen and we were able to overcome them. [ . . . ] Didn’t find a rhythm as quickly as we wanted to, but good enough to win and that’s the important thing.”
RJ Harvey gets a shoutout for his Week 1 performance
That’s not to say that there weren’t stars on the offense. Rookie running back RJ Harvey, in his first NFL game, broke loose on a beautiful 50-yard run. Perhaps the only complaint from Broncos Country in the performance was why they didn’t go to him more often.
Nevertheless, Lombardi opened up about the impressive performance from the rookie. Unfortunately, the feed cut out after his response on Harvey, which is a shame because the offensive coordinator was providing some excellent insight.
“Obviously, he had the big 50-yard run. Really a great run. He’s explosive, good vision. Really excited about how he played and excited for what he’s got going in the future. Really, really good first performance we felt.”
Sutton and Nix connection looked as advertised
Another bright spot was seeing Courtland Sutton work with his quarterback. While Nix finished his day going 25 of 40 for 176 yards with one touchdown, two interceptions, and a fumble lost, the Sutton-Nix connection was alive and well. Sutton was targeted nine times and brought in six catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.
Again, it’s incredibly difficult to win in the National Football League, and while the offense did struggle, the team pulled out a win. The Colts are no slouch, as they’ll be looking to avenge the matchup in 2024, which ultimately helped the Broncos reach the postseason.
Broncos Country should remember that game fondly, as Bonitto stole a lateral and charged down the field for a touchdown. Look for Nix and the offense to get back on track, the defense to continue their dominance, and maybe even another special moment from Bonitto during the game.
