The Denver Broncos new head coach just went back on everything by regretting and apologizing for what he said about another coach.
Sean Payton recently let it all out in a USA Today interview, where he told the reporter exactly how he feels. He went off on the Broncos in 2022, and their coaching efforts, and he also went in on the New York Jets and their offseason shenanigans.
He was asked about the interview on Friday and instantly let everyone know he regretted what was said.
"Listen, I had one of those moments where I still had my Fox [network television] hat on and not my coaching hat on," Payton said Friday. "I said this to the team: We've had a great offseason relative to that; I've been preaching that message, and here I am, the veteran stepping in it. It was a learning experience for me, a mistake, obviously. I need a little bit more filter."
Payton added, "I needed a bit more restraint; I regret that."
The more shocking thing was how he went on about the Jets and Nathaniel Hackett, the Broncos coach, in 2022. All of this was something that could have been avoided, yet, he wanted to do an interview, an exclusive one at that.
However, he still doesn't feel good about the situation.
"I think the world of Robert," Payton said. "I don't know Nathaniel, but at the right time. It certainly will bring more interest to the game when we play them, but that seems light-years away but I'll handle it the right way."
Now that he has stated that he regrets it and basically apologized for everything that has been said, we can get back to focusing on football.
Payton has said before that he doesn't want any distractions around the team. He wants to do things his way with the media at a distance. He even made fun of the Jets for doing the Hard Knocks show. But now he has brought all this.
Let's just hope he is actually making this team better.
