The Denver Broncos have given cornerback Patrick Surtain II a four-year, $96 million contract extension with $77.5 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.
Surtain had two years left on his rookie contract but is now locked in through 2030. This was a no-brainer move by the Broncos, as he has been one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL since his first game as a rookie. Denver selected Surtain with the ninth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Since then, Surtain has been named to the Pro Bowl twice and was a first-team All-Pro in 2022. He is anchoring a young Broncos defense that has a talented secondary but an unproven defensive line. Having Surtain locking receivers down in coverage will give the Denver pass rush a bit more time to get home.
Surtain is the fourth-highest rated cornerback heading into the 2024 season per Pro Football Focus. In 50 games with 49 starts, Surtain has logged 187 total tackles, 36 passes defensed, seven interceptions and one touchdown. If he can stay healthy, Surtain could be on track for a Hall of Fame career.
Surtain and the Broncos kick off their season on Sunday with a road matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
