5 cornerbacks the Lions could look to make a move for with Terrion Arnold and D.J. Reed dealing with injuries, including one that the Lions have already coached and a future Hall of Famer
With Reed and Arnold possibly missing significant time, the Lions may need to go shopping
The Detroit Lions got a nice 34-10 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, but it came at a cost. The team lost both starting cornerbacks, D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold, to injuries. We don’t know how long-term their injuries are, but right now it sounds like there’s a chance both could be out next Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals and maybe beyond that for Reed.
With the latter in mind, here are five cornerbacks the Lions could either trade for or sign in the free agency market:
Riq Wollen, Seahawks
A name that has been floating around since last week is Woolen. NFL Insider Ian Rappoport reported that teams are viewing Woolen as available in the trade market closer to the trade deadline.
If that’s true, the Lions would be a great fit for him. They’ve actually gotten some close looks at him and even coached him sort of. In 2022, when Woolen played in the Senior Bowl, it was the Lions who were coaching him in that game. It was their turn to be the coaching staff.
Greg Newsome, Browns
The Lions just played against this guy on Sunday. Since he’s in the final year of his contract, there’s some thought out there that the Browns might look to move him instead of getting him signed to what should be a pretty hefty contract.
The Browns aren’t in the best spot cap-wise, so they might do it if they keep losing. That, of course, would mean the Lions would maybe have to pick up the check, but they’d get a strong starting cornerback out of it if they did.
L’Jarius Sneed, Titans
Sneed is not having a good time with the Titans, and I wonder if it’s because he doesn’t have a great supporting cast there. He excelled with the Chiefs when they had a deep defense.
The Lions have a strong defensive line and good linebackers who could help Sneed. Plus, he’s probably the cheapest option of the three when it comes to a trade.
Assante Samuel Jr., Free Agent
It’s surprising that he’s still out there. Yes, Samuel went out with a shoulder injury last October, but he should be good to go by now.
It’s strange. He was a decent cornerback for the Chargers since they took him in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Speaking of that draft, the Lions had him in for a visit ahead of that draft. They wound up not picking him.
Stephon Gilmore, Free Agent
The future Hall of Famer is still out there. He played in the NFC North last season for the Vikings and played well as a starter there. He’s still looking for a spot to play, and preferably looking for a place where he can win a championship and play. The Lions can be that spot.
