Brad Holmes and the Lions continue to look smart after Za’Darius Smith’s abrupt retirement
At the end of the day, the Lions dodged a bullet here
Brad Holmes and the Detroit Lions continue to look like geniuses for not bringing back Za’Darius Smith after releasing him following the 2024 season. This was the thing that Lins fans wanted so badly all summer long and then trashed Holmes when he signed with the Eagles and lauded Philly GM Howie Roseman for being so smart and getting him. Welp…
Za’Darius Smith announces his retirement from the NFL
The Lions chose to go with Marcus Davenport and Al-Quadin Muhammad, and now they’re third in the NFL in sacks and in the top five in pressures, too. So what was once considered to be the “biggest mistake Brad Holmes has ever made” or “Brad Holmes’ ego at work” now looks exactly like it’s always looked, smart. The Lions didn’t pay a player $9 million for six weeks of work, and Smith had clearly lost a step this season as well.
At the end of the day, the Lions talked a ton about how they felt comfortable with the group that they have, and that group has given plenty of reasons to believe that they were right to feel that way all along. With that said, one more player wouldn’t hurt, but Smith never fit the mold of that.
With all of that said, Smith had a really great career, and he helped the Lions win the NFC North last year. He was also a very personable guy and a fun interview. He really took ot the city of Detroit in the short time that he was here. He deserves to have a great retirement, and I’m sure he will.
