Detroit Lions free agency: 4 players the Lions should definitely avoid and Just Say No to
There is no time of year like free agency in the NFL. It is a chaotic mess where you can't really fall asleep and when you do, you hear the sound of your phone notifications in your dream. But I love it! One of my favorite things to do every year is the Just Say […]
There is no time of year like free agency in the NFL. It is a chaotic mess where you can't really fall asleep and when you do, you hear the sound of your phone notifications in your dream. But I love it!
One of my favorite things to do every year is the Just Say No article. It's the one time of year that I get to be the bad guy. Every year, Detroit Lions fans will see some players that they want to play for their home team and I get to tell them why that's a horrible idea.
With that said, here are four players the Lions need to avoid. If they see any of them walking down a hallway, they need to run the opposite direction.
WR Stefon Diggs
If there were a bus full of Lions people who believe the Lions need to acquire a receiver this offseason, I'm probably driving that bus. But this isn't the route.
Diggs is the top example of a guy who is not a culture fit for the Lions. This offseason, he's likely about to play for a fourth different team. While he's been able to stick with two of those teams for a good amount of time, both tenures have been filled with drama. There's no doubt he's been good in his career, but Detroit is looking for guys who fit their mold. Diggs just doesn't do that.
Now, you could argue that Diggs is really just a guy who wants to win and is maybe a bit misunderstood. If that's the case, then maybe it's not the worst idea. But the fact remains that the Lions need to get younger at the WR3 spot, and Diggs is 32 years old.
LB De'Vondre Campbell
If we're still on that bus, here is the bomb that requires us to stay at 55 MPH, or it will explode. Campbell notoriously walked off the field this past season and said he didn't want to play for the 49ers anymore. Last week, he trashed anyone who said bad things about him, saying "I'm rich and I never have to work again." I mean, do I really need to go into any more detail on this one? It's not happening anywhere, let alone Detroit.
Edge Josh Uche
Here's a guy that Lions fans have been asking about for some time now. Personally I've never really seen what people see in this guy. I get that he played at Michigan and there's a hope for a reunion and I get that he had a killer 2022 season, but he's largely been a ghost outside of that. In 2024 he played for two different teams and had 14 pressures and two sacks.
With all that said, I can see the draw of having him as a depth guy on a super cheap one year deal. Every time I do one of these I have one player that could be an exception. Uche is my one player that I won't complain about if the Lions add him.
Edge Matt Judon
It made some sense last year when the Patriots were considering trading him during training camp. Detroit didn't have that guy opposite Aidan Hutchinson and they needed it. Now they have Za'Darius Smith and it would make a lot of sense if they got younger at the position instead of adding another 32-year-old pass rusher. That's really the thing holding this one back.

The 2025 NFL Combine is in the books and we learned a lot about what the Lions are looking for and who they're talking to.
