Detroit Lions Mailbag: Could Sam LaPorta be traded at the trade deadline this season if the circumstances are right?

The 2025 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Lions walked out with some good talent. Lions fans have a lot of questions at the moment. Let's answer them.
Training camp can't get here fast enough because I am very much looking forward to the QB2 battle. Hendon Hooker vs Kyle Allen is going to be a fun one for sure.
This is Hooker's biggest challenge in the NFL so far and he has a chance to solidify himself as an NFL quarterback and a premium backup. For Allen, this is a guy who has been a starter in the NFL and has a chance to show that getting buried under Russell Wilson and Justin Fields last year wasn't the end for him.
We're not likely to see a lot of Goff in preseason games, so get ready to see these guys get all the time to go at it.
Speaking of that battle, I don't have a ton of confidence in Hooker right now. That can absolutely change. I'm not writing him off forever. I do have concerns about his age, and his play left something to be desired last summer, but in year two of being healthy and after a summer of work with a QB guru, he could come out swinging and show that he's the guy at QB2.
We'll see what happens. At this point, I think it's more than fair to assume that he's not going to be the guy who takes over for Jared Goff someday since he'll be 31 years old when Goff's contract ends.
That's an interesting question. Tight end is getting more and more expensive with the extensions for Trey McBride and George Kittle raising the prices for the good ones.
Kittle just got $76.4 million for four years. There's a good chance that LaPorta could get $80 million. The Lions do have a history of trading a tight end at the trade deadline right before he was due to make a historic amount of money. They did it with T.J. Hockenson. Will they do it with LaPorta?
If the trade deadline rolls around and the Lions are having a down season, I could see them entertaining offers for sure. I'm sure they would answer the phone and see what they could get. Would they actually do it? That I don't know.
What I do know is that it would save them some money that they could use to pay Brian Branch, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Jack Campbell.
Ultimately, I don't see the Lions having a bad season and feeling as though they need to sell guys off because of it.
I like this question. The guy I'm the most excited for is Ahmed Hassanein. I think people really don't realize how good this guy can be and how fast he can be good for this team.
I think the Giants could be really good this year. I know people will laugh at that, but they got my top quarterback in Jaxson Dart, they got Abdul Carter to go with Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns on that defensive line. Darius Alexander and Marcus Mbow are really strong picks, too. Plus, they got Malik Nabers last year. Look out for them.
I think the Lions quietly did that already with Avonte Maddox. While it says cornerback next to his name right now, he played safety a lot for the Eagles. Way more than he played cornerback. I think that's the Lions' plan for him now that he's here.
I think most of those guys show their worth during the training camp, but I'm putting my money on Giovanni Manu surprising people this summer. I don't think he shocks everyone and takes the starting job, but I think he shows Lions fans the vision for the future with him.
He improved all season long, even though he never played during what was being called his redshirt season. This year we're going to see what he can do. The ceiling on this thing this year is that he might be able to take Dan Skippers' place as the Lions' swing tackle. The future is that he's a starter when Taylor Decker's time is up.
Ahmed Hassanein’s journey to the Detroit Lions is one that’s full of miracles and divine intervention
