Injuries could allow a Lions practice squad guy to see the field in a regular season game for the first time since 2021

Losing David Montgomery for a while absolutely hurts the Detroit Lions because he was one of those guys that was the heart and soul of this team. The silver lining here, besides the fact that it looks like Montgomery could be back this year, is the Lions have a chance to show that they have a pretty deep running back room.

We know Jahmyr Gibbs is one of the best running backs in the league, but now we get to see Craig Reynolds get some run, and rookie Sione Vaki finally gets to be unleashed. One of the big questions we have here at A to Z Detroit though is will we see Jermar Jefferson this year?

Jefferson has been one of those ultimate team guys. If you didn't have a passionate knowledge of the team, you might not realize that he has been here the entire time Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell have been here.

The Lions took Jefferson in the seventh-round of the 2021 NFL Draft with nearly the final pick of the entire draft. There were only two more guys selected after him. Jefferson got a chance to play 7 games that year, but only really got to get to the field to run the ball 15 times.

The highlight was his big game against the Steelers where he ran for 41 yards and this touchdown.

Jefferson had 10 more rushing attempts that season and that was it for him. He has not seen the field for a regular season game since the Lions win over the Cardinals in December of 2021.

He has managed to stay with the Lions this entire time for the most part though. The Lions waived him a few times, but they always brought him back. This summer there seemed like a chance that the 24-year-old might get a shot to play more. Lions head coach Dan Campbell really touted him during training camp.

“I almost don’t want to answer it because I feel like it’s the same thing, I say something about a guy and I feel like it’s the kiss of death because the next practice is – Jefferson is in a really good place right now. He’s in a really good place. Really good place.”

That was the rap we got on Jefferson all summer long. The problem is that he's on a team with the best running back duo in the league, a backup everyone loves and trusts, and a rookie the Lions just spent a lot to trade up for. Surprisingly no team tried to claim him when he was waived at the end of camp.

Now with Montgomery down, does this give Jefferson a chance to at the very least get a practice squad elevation? Maybe he doesn't get a chance to hit the field, but could he at least dress for a game? We're going to see. If you ask us, he's earned a carry or two at some point.
